What is the role?


The Mechanical Design Team Leader will contribute towards the development of our next generation of Mpac automation machines.


Your skills are likely to have been through developing automation or special purpose machines for the world market, experience of designing CE compliant systems in any of the following; pharmaceutical, healthcare, consumer goods, clean energy industries. An aptitude to mechanical design using 3D CAD and implementing proven theory in a practical and efficiently manner is likely to bring success.


Are you the person we are looking for?


Provide professional guidance to your team on the whole design process from initial involvement with Applications through to support for the Service Department for the projects in your portfolio as well as the following:


Working with the engineering managers to provide technical risk mitigation plans to minimise the technical risk of delivery through the whole life of a project, from concept to service involvement, with respect of safety, functionality, environment, cost, machine life, reliability, through the adoption of proven methods;


Assist your design team to always design machines to have an operating window within the target required by commissioning and the customers’ requirements;


Provide clear instructions and ‘how-to’ aligned to Mpac’s SOP’s, templates, WI and handbooks, and advise where needed additional are developed or enhanced, playing an active role continuous development;


Manage the delivery plans aligned with project requirements from initial sales order;


Working with the engineering managers guidance for the teams to deliver safe, fit for purpose, maintainable, reliable, sustainable, fully integrated electro-mechanical modules and machines, balancing the technical risks with agreement the EC&I manager and the Mpac specialist engineers.

Provide the engineering delivery with the correct dates, metrics and support to allow for accurate documentation planning and delivery.


Guide your team to maximise proven technology, reducing project specific bespoke designs to a minimum.


Support application and design managers with accurate estimates for mechanical design and support engineering delivery with accurate assessment of the level of documentation required for build.


Support mechanical design managers and project lead engineers to efficiently plan projects through the business from sales enquiry through to SAT and handover to service.


Work alongside specialist engineers and product specialists to ensure the designs are aligned with best practice and customer expectations.


Provide technical input during design review meetings.


Assigning team roles and responsibilities for project leads for the mechanical function making sure to prioritise the needs of electrical and software functions to a successful delivery.


Key Responsibilities:


Designing and delivering engineered projects in your portfolio on time, of the required quality and within budgetary limits.


Provide clear resource requirements for projects, including necessary skill set and aid with interviewing for your projects in your portfolio.


Assist with Interviewing suitable candidates for projects in your portfolio.


Work in constantly improve the business processes are optimised in the delivery of mechanical design to deliver best results for Mpac and our customers.


Ensure documentation is checked and fit for purpose, any improvements are fed to the mechanical & electrical quality leads.


Ensure any design resource for build, commissioning, FAT, SAT, and service are planned and provided to the engineering delivery and service department.


Provide scope for improvement projects to improve delivery efficiency and quality improvements.

Provide planning and liaison with outside contractors required for project delivery.


Assist in planning meetings with the Mpac management team to ensure timely delivery.


Develop your team with personal development plans and appraisals aligned to the goals of the engineering department.


Check design documentation is completed correctly and available for all project releases, ensuring quality, suitability and correctness and aligned to the specific project requirements.


Technical Skills and Qualifications:


  • Experience in the mechanical design of industrial automation.
  • Experience of working in an innovative environment and providing innovative solutions.
  • Experience in evaluating technical requirements and providing viable solutions.
  • Experience in identifying and reporting long and short-term project resource requirements.
  • Interpretation of customer requirements and presentation of design solutions at internal design reviews.
  • Commercially aware of the effective use of resources, scope change and implications of choice.
  • Applying technical due diligence, being risk aware, performing FMEA and using design studies and POP work to mitigate risk.
  • Ability to manage priorities for stakeholders and providing clear reporting.
  • Ability to provide clear technical instruction.
  • Understand and deliver efficiency improvements.
  • Methods of improving delivered Quality of design.
  • Planning work and scheduling resource.
