Job Description

The role sits within the Communications and Engagement department.

Resuscitation Council UK’s (RCUK) Communications and Engagement team delivers creative communications and authentic engagement activities that support the organisation’s vision to 2030, which is to ensure that everyone in the UK has the skills they need to save a life and receives appropriate resuscitation.

Our audiences include health and social care professionals, members of the public, charities, professional bodies and associations, UK policy makers and campaigning groups.

We are looking for a self-starter and a team player, who is motivated, creative and loves working on integrated campaigns. This includes securing target levels of media coverage and building and maintaining contacts with journalists across national, local and trade media with the aim of raising RCUK’s profile and promoting our work. This role is ideal if you’re currently an Assistant / Junior and looking to progress to an Officer role.

You will need to be an excellent and creative writer who is comfortable dealing with Journalists. And, have experience working on successful campaigns aimed at reaching a wide and diverse audiences and that meet organisational priorities.

The successful candidate will be responsible for developing and overseeing the RCUK case study database, with support from the Media and Campaigns Manager. A key aspect of RCUK’s 2030 vision is to close the gap in health inequalities relating to cardiac arrest, by increasing awareness of Bystander CPR in deprived and under-represented communities across the UK. Everyday stories from people impacted by cardiac arrest will play a huge part in making this happen.

The Media and Campaigns Officer plays a key role in our ability to raise awareness for, and build the profile of, Resuscitation Council UK, guidelines, courses, and standards. Working with other members of the Communications and Engagement team, you will also support in initiatives to further public awareness of cardiopulmonary resuscitation, defibrillation and support for survivors.

The Media and Campaigns Officer will support the Media and Campaigns Manager on campaigns throughout the year, writing and issuing press releases, dealing with reactive media enquiries, drafting spokespeople briefings, and identifying new stories and case studies to further RCUK objectives.

The post holder will work closely with all members of the Communications and Engagement, Operations, Clinical and Service Development departments and build strong relationships with the wider resuscitation community. What are we doing about all this? 

We want to improve people’s chance of survival from a cardiac arrest wherever they are – whether that’s in a hospital bed, at home or walking in the park. And we want to ensure that CPR is only attempted when appropriate. Our training courses and scientific evidence-based guidelines are designed to help not just all types of healthcare professional, but members of the public too. Because everyone should have the skills to try to save a life.

You would be joining us at an exciting time for the organisation. We will be developing a range of new workstreams in 2023 which will enable us to deliver better support and services for key stakeholders and clients across the resuscitation community.

We will continue our public-facing work to make sure all elements of the Chain of Survival are developed to match the best in the world. We will also continue our work to ensure that best practice and clinical excellence in resuscitation are embedded across the NHS, and beyond.

We want to give people their best chance of successful outcomes from cardiac arrest and improve patient and family experience in conversations, decisions and planning for end-of-life care.
