Job Purpose and Background

As Media Relations and Spokesperson Engagement Manager, you will be responsible for delivering global media activation plans for CDP as we engage the world’s largest businesses, financial institutions, and cities to disclose environmental data and take climate-positive decisions.

You will help develop and implement successful global media strategies to ensure that our brand, data, and voice are consistently visible in the world’s most widely read publications and seen as a ‘go-to’ commentator by leading business, financial, and environmental journalists.

Reporting to CDP’s Associate Director Media Relations & Spokesperson Engagement, you will work in a three-person global Media Relations and Spokesperson Engagement team within our Communications and Marketing (M&C) function. You will collaborate closely with Market Activation teams in EMEA, APAC, and the Americas, our Storytelling & Data Insights team, Events teams within M&C, our CEO Office team, and other key senior spokespeople, in addition to our Commercial and Impact teams.

The successful candidate will be an experienced Media Relations professional with demonstrable success in delivering high-impact media coverage, building a top-tier network of relevant journalists, managing PR agencies, and coordinating with leadership personnel for interviews and speaking appearances. You will have a keen eye for a news story, excellent disciplinary skills and knowledge, and the ability to work under tight timelines to deliver punchy and insightful commentary and stories to your journalist network. You will be comfortable working across global teams with different cultures, leading on individual projects, and have strong experience pitching news stories and ideas to journalists. You have excellent writing skills, are responsible, personable, and persuasive, with a results-oriented mindset and high standards for success. Experience working with top-tier media and executive spokespeople will be essential for success in this role.

The role includes:

  1. Drafting global media materials for CDP announcements, research, and campaigns.
  2. Partnering with CDP Market Activation Leads to execute global media campaigns.
  3. Developing CDP’s position as a key ‘go-to’ commentator on strategic climate/nature topics for top-tier publications and news organizations.
  4. Pitching data and commentary to insert CDP’s expertise into relevant news articles, podcasts, features, and other media outlets.
  5. Forming and nurturing personal relationships with key journalists, publications, and event organizers.
  6. Liaising with CDP’s Storytelling & Data Insights within Marketing & Communications to rapidly respond to trending issues.
  7. Ensuring CDP’s positioning, key messaging, and CDP strategic objectives are flawlessly represented in all media activations.
  8. Shaping the news agenda in top-tier global media to align with CDP’s strategy.
  9. Pitching and preparing CDP leadership for speaking appearances.
  10. Coordinating CDP’s PR agencies.
  11. Media monitoring and evaluation of CDP media campaigns.
  12. Owning and updating core template press and media materials.

The successful candidate will have the following capabilities:

  1. Experience in the corporate, financial, governmental, or sustainability sector working with corporates, local or national government, public institutions, or financial organizations.
  2. Tactical PR disciplinary expertise.
  3. Experience in consistently delivering high-quality media coverage to set objectives.
  4. Knowledge of relevant global media publications and key events.
  5. Ability to draft flawless media materials, craft storylines, and write persuasive pitches.
  6. Ability to build an effective top-tier journalist network.
  7. Ability to identify a potential news hook and opportunity to insert CDP’s voice.
  8. Confidence in coordinating and briefing senior stakeholders.
  9. An interested and exploratory mindset to find new opportunities, with a proactive, opportunistic, and ‘can do’ approach to delivery.
  10. Knowledge and passion for corporate environmental topics, relevant regulation, and/or sustainable finance.
  11. Flawless (C2 or native level) written English.
  12. Strong business communications experience and a very capable command of business language, with the ability to interact convincingly with people at different levels of seniority and different cultural backgrounds.
  13. Experience working in fast-paced (ideally global) teams with multiple senior internal and external stakeholders and ability to manage relationships well.
  14. A meticulous eye for detail and accuracy.
  15. Willingness to travel occasionally.
  16. Excellent knowledge of various software including but not limited to Microsoft Office – particularly Excel -, CMS/CRM systems, media tools - and a clear ability to learn new tools quickly.
