Job Description

Who are we?

Make your application after reading the following skill and qualification requirements for this position.
Thames Water is the UK's largest water and wastewater company. We make a daily difference to our 15 million customers by supplying 2.6 billion litres of water through 32,000 km of pipes, keeping taps flowing and toilets flushing. At Thames Water, every one of our actions, big and small, matters every day. Water is essential to life, so our business is always open.
What you'll be doing
In the exciting role of an Operational Improvement Lead, you will manage improvement projects and initiatives as part of Operational Projects and Logistics (OPAL) and the wider business.
Whilst the role fundamentally operates as a project manager, this unique position offers the chance for you to get stuck in with the operational teams to really understand how things work and how your initiatives and programmes will help deliver change for our customers both internally and externally.
You will work within the Strategy team to drive forward a long-term, well-governed business strategy for OPAL. The projects we deliver cover a huge range of opportunities across all aspects of our business - so you'll never be bored! To give you a flavour of what you can expect, some of our ongoing programmes include:

  • Thames Water Alternative Fuel programme - part of our ambition to meet our net zero targets
  • Internal Water Networks business transformation - continuous improvement of a recently insourced core business workstream
  • Facilities, Grounds Maintenance & Haulage projects and so much more!
Every project is different, and you could be working on more than one initiative at a time, so as the Operational Improvement Lead some of your duties will include:
  • Delivery of your projects in line with our established OPAL project framework - don't worry, if you're successful we'll teach you this!
  • Working with a range of different stakeholders, from engaging with Senior Managers who'll sponsor your projects through to working closely with key Subject Matter Experts who'll help shape the detail in your plan
  • Keeping on top of project-related documentation to help effectively manage the project
  • Getting stuck in! Being an Operational Improvement Lead is different to other project management roles as we love to get really close to the teams we work with to help keep the project moving forward; not only does this help our SMEs to help you deliver the project, it also gives you the opportunity to learn a lot about our business
  • £37,520 to 46,900 per annum, depending on skills and experience
  • This position is based at Kemble Court, Reading
  • This role operates on a hybrid basis - working from both the office and home
  • The working hours are 36 hours per week, Monday to Friday
What you should bring to the role
  • Previous project/change management experience
  • Experience dealing with and influencing stakeholders at all levels
  • Strong planning skills and self-management capability
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written
  • Able to work under pressure and effectively prioritise conflicting requirements
  • Able to competently use MS Office software
What's in it for you?
Our competitive salary package includes an excellent contributory pension, 26 days holiday per year increasing to 30 with length of service and a wider benefits scheme including our benefits hub, which is packed full of offers and information to save you money and support your well-being.
Thames Water is a dynamic, rewarding and diverse place to work, with opportunities around every corner. If you join our team, you'll enjoy a fulfilling career and flexible working arrangements.
