Postdoctoral Fellow in Experimental Fluid Mechanics

Faculty of Engineering and Physical Sciences

Location: Boldrewood Campus
Salary: £34,980 to £41,732per annum
Full Time Fixed Term (2 years)
Closing Date: Monday 08 July 2024
Interview Date: To be confirmed

Are you interested in Experimental Fluid Mechanics? Do you relish the challenge of applying advanced diagnostics to understand flow phenomena? Do you want to join a vibrant and diverse team of researchers working on a range of topics in aerodynamics, aeroacoustics, turbulent shear flows and fluid-structure interactions?

The Department of Aeronautics and Astronautics is seeking two postdoctoral researchers to join our Experimental Fluids laboratory to work on different projects!

Main roles and responsibilities

You will carry out research aimed at developing fundamental understanding of fluid flows. Current projects on offer include,

· Momentum and scalar transport in turbulent boundary layers

· Aerodynamics and aeroacoustics of vortex-dominated flows

· Development of unique experimental facilities, diagnostics methods and data processing/assimilation techniques

You will be in an enviable position of carrying out unique measurements in state-of-the-art facilities to tackle important and exciting problems. Your specific project will be tailored to suit your interests/skills within above-mentioned topics and you will be collaborating with other researchers working on similar problems.

What do they need to do the role successfully (qualifications, experience, skills from the person specification)

You should have or be close to completing a PhD in experimental fluid mechanics where analysis of data is a strong component in addition to acquisition of data using different measurement techniques. Experience and knowledge in experimental/facility design as well as manufacturing and fabrication of models is critical. Strong communication and language skills, as evidenced by publications and presentations, are essential.

About the University

The University of Southampton is an institution in the top one per cent of world universities* and one of the UK’s top 15 research-intensive universities. We have an international reputation for research, teaching and enterprise and hold an Athena SWAN Silver award.

About the Faculty

You will join a leading Engineering Faculty with an excellent record of collaborative research with industry and academic institutions in the UK and abroad. In September 2013 an Athena SWAN Bronze award was received by the School of Engineering in recognition of our continued commitment to improving equality for women in science and engineering.

The Faculty offers exceptional research facilities in the areas of fluids, structures and their interactions, including a new world-class fluid dynamics facilities complex in the Boldrewood Engineering Campus that includes a 138m towing tank, a refractive-index matched facility, water flumes, wind tunnels and an aeroacoustics facility.
