About Us:

Conserving the homes of Leighton and Sambourne for future generations.

The Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea manages two of the most important house museums in London: Leighton House, the former studio-house of the Victorian artist Frederic, Lord Leighton; and Sambourne House, home of the legendary illustrator Linley Sambourne. Both have recently reopened after an award-winning refurbishment. We work hard to ensure a high standard of care and presentation for the houses’ contents – a diverse range of objects that includes textiles, sculptures, and paintings.

The Role:

Working across two unique museums, this is a newly created role that you can truly make your own. As our only in-house conservator, you will focus on ensuring the regular specialist cleaning and inspection of the houses and their contents. We’ll look to you to set up schedules to maintain and keep track of the condition of objects, and to deal with problems such as pest control as they arise. You’ll have the support of our friendly, collaborative museum team and will manage the activities of contracted cleaners and external specialist conservators. You’ll also train Visitor Experience Assistants in light cleaning.

Due to the nature of this part-time role, you would be required to work from our offices 100% of your time, i.e. your 2.5 working days must be based at our Museums.

You’re likely to have experience and relevant qualifications in conservation housekeeping or preventative conservation and will have carried out hands-on work in a historic building, museum or gallery setting. With knowledge of conserving a wide range of objects and materials, you’ll also have built a good understanding of conservation housekeeping across the entire calendar year. While independent working is a key feature of the role, the success of our small team depends on a flexible, collaborative, proactive attitude, so you must be able to juggle priorities.

In return, you can look forward to a package that includes a competitive salary, a high-quality pension scheme and generous annual leave plus bank holidays.

Please apply online explaining how you meet the requirements set out in the person specification and job description. We reserve the right to extend or close this vacancy early without warning subject to the volume of suitable applicants.

Please do not upload any documents, including CVs/Covering Letters or supporting statements, as these documents will not be reviewed and could result in your application not being shortlisted.
