Job Summary: We are seeking a dynamic and delivery focused professional to join our award-winning Ground Engineering consultancy to provide project and staff line management within our South Central region. The successful candidate will have a proven track record in technical project delivery within the geo-environmental field, and an ability to manage a team of consultancy staff. Reporting to the Regional Manager and Project Directors, the successful candidate will be responsible for the technical delivery and financial success of their projects alongside maintaining and developing client relations within one or more of CGL’s key market sectors and supporting and developing a team of early career engineers.


Key Responsibilities:


Undertake the role of Project Manager for a portfolio of different projects (typically ≤£100k in value) to include managing project risk and change effectively to deliver to regional commercial targets, technical standards and programme;

  • Complete and maintain project financial reporting to track project performance / health and regularly update pipeline forecasting keeping Project Directors, the Regional Manager and Commercial Lead informed;

  • To be a competent technical report author producing deliverables that are factually accurate and with defensible recommendations and conclusions, within your specialist area and be able to withstand reasonable technical scrutiny from senior staff / approvers within the team;

  • Undertake checks of project technical deliverables, within your area of expertise, to include factual and interpretative reports, risk assessments, analytical calculations, testing schedules, Conceptual Site Models and design recommendations such that minimal changes are required following review;

  • To be able to demonstrate technical competence and confidence in meetings with clients, regulators, co-consultants and other stakeholders and to be able to lead these meetings, acting as the technical specialist, where required;

  • Scope, price and produce technically robust bids and proposals, within your area of expertise, in combination with review and negotiation of contractual terms, supported by the Project Director and Commercial Lead, to meet tendering requirements and to help secure relevant projects and frameworks for the region;

  • To be a competent line manager for a small team of geotechnical / engineering geologists and geo-environmental engineers, graduate engineers and senior engineers. Includes resourcing your team to maintain staff utilisation, undertaking annual and mid-year appraisals and performance reviews, checking and approval of timesheets and expense claims and support with day to day pastoral care for those within your team;

  • Support the Regional Manager and Business Development Lead with business development activities to include maintaining and expanding existing key accounts and client offerings and identifying new clients / markets for the region;

  • Contribute to the professional awareness of CGL by the industry through publishing of papers, presentation of CPD to external parties, generating and posting appropriate content for social media feeds;

    Prepare health & safety RAMS for projects, identify and record near misses and incidents and support your team with the timely reporting of such via CGL’s systems. Liaise with Project Directors and SHEQ management with respect to health & safety and quality issues and enact appropriate mitigation measures;

    Act as a role model and mentor for the development of less experienced staff and be a technical ‘sounding board’ for staff in your area of recognised specialism;

    Support the CGL culture of excellence in delivery, seeking opportunities for continuous improvement of standards and governance procedures, mitigating technical, commercial and H&S risks.


    Attributes and Experience


    The ideal candidate will be able to demonstrate the following qualifications, skills and experience:


    Bachelor’s and advanced degrees in geo-environmental engineering or a related field;

    Chartership through a recognised relevant body ideally CGeol, CEnv or CSci;

    Experienced Project Manager with a sound knowledge of managing risk and change control, programme and resource management and with a track record in delivering to budget, margins and deadlines;

    Demonstrable experience in geo-environmental site characterisation, assessment and remediation with a sound knowledge of the Environment Agency’s Land Contamination Risk Management (LCRM) guidance and other applicable standards and regulations;

    Experience of undertaking and checking generic and detailed quantitative risk assessments, including a working knowledge of the Contaminated Land Exposure Assessment (CLEA) tool and Remedial Targets Methodology (RTM);

    Experience of producing and checking remediation options appraisals, cost benefit analyses, remediation strategies and verification reports;

    Knowledge of remedial technologies including those applicable to emerging contaminants an advantage;

    Experience in business development and Client relationship management. Successful in developing winning bids and proposals to drive work intake;

    Experience of key contractual issues with respect to preparing and negotiating bids and administering projects, ideally including knowledge of the NEC suite of contracts;

    Excellent communicator, able to connect with staff, clients, contractors and other stakeholders at various levels;

    Experience in line management and/or staff mentoring ideally including completion of annual appraisals, performance and probation reviews and pastoral care;

    Demonstrate a contribution to safe working and SHEQ culture and support to senior colleagues in this work;

    Full UK Driving Licence, with ability and willingness to travel to other CGL / Client offices and work sites.
