Within our locally owned, independent civil and structural engineering design partnership we have an exciting opportunity for an experienced, enthusiastic and ambitious Engineer to join our Edinburgh Team as a Principal Engineer (Team Leader Position) who will help establish and lead a small team of engineers and technicians working on the design of infrastructure projects.

Our Infrastructure team specialises in providing sustainable development infrastructure solutions to mainly residential and commercial sector clients in Scotland. The team also works closely with other Fairhurst disciplines and offices to provide integrated solutions on high profile multi-disciplinary projects.

We are looking for someone with a positive and practical approach to engineering to provide team leadership and enhance our technical capability. We currently have a varied workload in both the private and public sector ranging from large scale masterplans in the retail sector to residential schemes of varying scales, from pre-planning through to construction. The successful candidate will need to show experience in roads, external works and drainage for these types of projects.

The Infrastructure team in Edinburgh operates from our City Centre office situated at the heart of Edinburgh’s New Town close to several transport options and all the vibrant amenities Edinburgh has to offer.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Leading projects in the office from small to large scale developments.
  • Preparation of site appraisals for residential developments
  • Undertake feasibility and pre-planning assessments of engineering infrastructure
  • Manage and review documents, designs and drawings completed by team to ensure consistent high quality and compliance with design standards, industry best practice, contractual obligations and client expectations
  • Liaison with clients, regulators and other stakeholders
  • Attendance at design meetings, site meetings and carry out site inspections.
  • Project management, team management and budgetary control.
  • Business development through client liaison, networking and preparation of bids and proposals
  • Deliver work in compliance with Health and Safety legislation and Quality Management procedures.

  • Provide technical leadership, providing support, mentoring and guidance to developing team members.
  • Support in the preparation of service and fee proposals
QUALIFICATIONS / EXPERIENCE
  • Civil Engineering degree/HND educated in a relevant discipline
  • Ideal candidates for the position will have at least 5 years post qualification experience working in the Infrastructure Sector.
  • Excellent knowledge of infrastructure design at concept, feasibility and preliminary level.
  • Good knowledge of relevant policy and design standards (e.g. DMRB, Sewers for Scotland).
  • Experience in the design of adopted drainage and highways, with a working knowledge of UK design standards, together with the ability to balance several projects and meet project timetables
  • Competent in the use of AutoCAD, PDS/3D Civils, Innovyze Microdrainage and Autotrack.
  • Proven reporting, written and verbal communication skills will be required, together with an ability to work as part of a team.
  • Flexible and enthusiastic approach to working within a team structure.
  • Full clean driving license
