Principal or Senior Scientist/Engineer – Battery Materials

£40,000 - £62,000 per annum - dependent on experience

Why this role is important for CPI’swork

CPI has an exciting opportunity for aSenior or Principal Scientist/Engineer to join the established and growing Battery/Energy Materials team within the National Formulation Centre based at NETPark in Sedgefield.

We are looking for an individual to provide leadership and high-level technical expertise in the area of Battery/Energy materials, technology selection and process engineering in order to identify, develop and lead delivery of large scale / complex projects in strategic, collaborative and commercial space and develop technology team level knowledge and practice. The principal acts as acredible technical expert for the organisation, drawing upon and developing abroad range of technical know-how to provide technical expertise and advice to arange of internal and external stakeholders and to inform technical strategy and direction.

Some exciting projects the team have recently worked onare:

  • AMBIC (Advanced Battery Materials Industrialisation Centre)—£ 12 m investment in capital equipment to facilitate scale-up of current and next generation battery materials for our customers
  • HISTORY Supporting the development of high Si content anodes for solid state battery applications as part of a UK consortium
  • BatCat – Supporting the development of adigital twin for battery manufacturing for Li-ion and Li‑S as part of aEuropean consortium

  • To maintain consistent and documented compliance with all relevant Safety, Health and Environmental ( SHE ), quality and best practice requirements.
  • To identify new technical developments and trends, translate these into building blocks for opportunities within the technology team, initiating the creation of (new) technological innovations/applications.
  • To build, maintain and exploit anetwork of relevant external stakeholders, customers, partners, research organisations and authorities, to represent the technology team and self as acredible specialist / expert (refer to job descriptions for further details), identifying opportunity for future projects and developments..
  • To work collaboratively with Business Development, Bid Proposal and technical colleagues to contribute to proposal / project development and direct customer engagement. Engage in and where appropriate, seek out (refer to job descriptions for further details) business development opportunities.
  • To set up, plan and execute experimental / pilot scale runs and analyse, interpret and report the results of these, translating obtained findings and knowledge.
  • To be responsible for providing clearly documented records of technical data, decisions, methodologies, calculations and software use in an agreed format.

To take ownership in agreeing weekly workplans with line manager, project manager(s) and other relevant stakeholders, and delivering plan to agreed schedule

The person we are seeking

Will be educated to HNC , Foundation Degree, Degree, Masters Degree or PhD level (or equivalent) in aScientific/Engineering discipline plus significant industrial experience at asenior leveland;

  • Will possess significant experience and technical expertise in unit operations typically associated with battery manufacture such as dry powder handling and mixing, slurry handling and mixing, substrate coating and drying as well as compelling evidence of complex technical problem solving in theseareas.
  • Is able to take responsibility for diverse or complex technical activities where it is necessary to use own initiative and judgement, implementing innovative solutions in business-critical situations.
  • Can demonstrate evidence of building knowledge sharing and network building practice across teams and organisations to achieve desired results.
  • Is arecognised industry expert in afield related to battery materials, processing, or technology, as well as having broader technical knowledge and capability, and ability to apply in avariety of contexts

It would be great if youalso:

  • Have chartered status with arelevant professional institution
  • Are an active member of aprofessional body, engaging with peers beyond CPI
  • Extensive experience working directly in or closely with abattery manufacturing environment in aprocess engineering or process development role.
