Our dedicated and specialised Power Systems team play a key role in designing and delivering major projects in multiple international locations.  The Power Systems team provide design services and power systems analysis in a variety of sectors including distribution and transmission networks such grid substation design, and renewables such as grid connected PV & battery energy storage systems design/compliance studies. In addition to our own clients, we support our market leading Critical Systems team who focus on hyper scale data centres, and our Building Services teams on other major construction projects across the business.

The Role

This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced and talented Power Systems Engineer to join our team to work on the design of some of the most exciting projects in Europe. 

We are specifically looking for someone who has experience in substation design, to undertake and lead substation our projects. The role will suit someone who is already experienced in the design of medium and high voltage distribution systems with experience with industry recognised power systems analysis software.

The successful applicant will have the opportunity to lead teams, develop younger engineers and progress their career, along with growing their own knowledge by working with our vastly experienced technical experts.

This role would ideally be based in our London office, but we have power systems teams in both Manchester and Birmingham.

Cundall offer the chance to share time between working from home and working in the office.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Produce engineering designs, calculations, and specifications, using appropriate technical software
  • To be fully conversant in power systems including (i) grid substations design (ii) CT calculations (iii) differential protection stability slopes (iv) rate of rise voltage calculations
  • To fully understand power systems software to model complex network and run advanced power system studies
  • To fully understand the theory behind power systems software
  • Co-ordinate input from other disciplines and specialisms as required
  • Prepare technical reports in accordance with clients’ briefs
  • Supervise and co-ordinate the production of technical drawings
  • Check calculations, specifications, drawings and reports produced by others, in accordance with Cundall Operational Procedures (OPs)
  • Attend and participate in client and (internal and external) project meetings
  • Undertake site visits to monitor the progress of works against Cundall’s specification, and highlight issues to the contractor, client and/or (internal or external) project manager as necessary
  • Report regularly to relevant manager(s) on the performance of projects against agreed project plans and budgets
  • Correspond with external third parties (e.g. clients, contractors, architects and/or manufacturers) regarding information and technical queries
  • Comply with project management, Operational (QA), Environmental and Health and Safety procedures
  • Provide training and coaching to less experienced staff
  • Proactively manage own continuing professional development (including, where appropriate, actively pursuing Chartership with an appropriate professional institution).
  • Attend project meetings, site as well as factory tests both in the UK and abroad.

The Skills

Educated to degree level in Power Systems Engineering, you have gained experience in an Electrical Engineering role within the power systems field.

You will be conversant in power systems design including grid substations design, CT calculations, arc flash calculations, differential protection stability slopes and rate of rise voltage calculations. Knowledge of G99 and grid compliance studies is advantageous.

You have proven experience of detailed co-ordination with other design disciplines, and are well-versed in theory behind, and use of, relevant design software, such as DIgSILENT Power Factory, ETAP, or SKM-PTW analysis software to model complex networks and run advanced power system studies.

You have proven ability in producing schematic diagrams, fault and discrimination studies, preparing specifications and project reports, carrying out site inspections and surveys, and detail design development, and crucially - you have a passion for accurate design of power systems.

Given the collaborative and client focussed nature of this role, excellent communication skills and experience of using your initiative to overcome challenges are essential.
