Property Planning Lawyer
Location: Birmingham
Salary: £47,450 - £71,160 (including 20% Flex fund)

Our client organisation, at the forefront of the High-Speed Rail project, is recruiting for a Property Counsel specialising in property and compulsory purchase. This is a unique opportunity to be part of the largest infrastructure project in Europe, providing expert legal advice critical to its delivery and future operation.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Compulsory Purchase Advice: Provide high-quality advice on compulsory purchase, including service of notices, blight, tribunal claims, associated compensation issues, and discretionary property schemes.
  • Compensation and Dispute Resolution: Offer expert advice on compensation and disputes arising from the exercise of CPO powers, manage litigation, and engage in Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR).
  • Additional Powers and Consents: Assist with advising on and obtaining additional powers, including Development Consent Orders, TCPA 1990 planning permissions, Permitted Development Rights, and Listed Building consents.
  • Planning and Litigation: Provide high-quality advice on planning matters and assist with litigation cases involving planning issues.
  • Case Management: Handle a variety of complex property/compulsory purchase matters, including drafting and negotiating bespoke agreements.

Knowledge and Qualifications:

  • Qualified Solicitor: Post-qualification experience in compulsory purchase law and property/planning law.
  • Specialised Knowledge: Experience dealing with government departments, utilities, or transport undertakers on projects involving compulsory acquisition powers.

Experience:

  • Multidisciplinary Teamwork: Experience working within a multidisciplinary team on a wide range of property issues.
  • Construction/Infrastructure Projects: Advising on construction or infrastructure projects.
  • Compulsory Purchase and Planning: Proven experience advising on compulsory purchase and planning matters.

Skills:

  • High-Pressure Environment: Ability to work effectively in a high-pressure, demanding environment on diverse property, planning, and compulsory purchase issues.
  • Problem Solving: Strong problem-solving skills, including working without established precedent or procedure.
  • Planning and Organisation: Excellent planning and organisational skills to manage a high, diverse, and complex caseload.
  • Effective Communication: Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing, with colleagues and stakeholders.
  • Infrastructure Project Challenges: Understanding the challenges facing the delivery of a major infrastructure project and the role of the in-house legal function in successful delivery.
