Job Description

Regional Design Director required to work with this leading Tier 1 main contracting construction business based out of the regional office in Newbury, Berkshire.

This is an excellent opportunity for an established Head of Design / Regional Design Manager to step up and lead the function for this business with a turnover in excess of £150m - typically complex project across multiple sectors along the M4 / M3 Corridors, Hants/Berks/Surrey + region.

ABOUT THE ROLE

As Regional Design Director you will be a valuable part of our business, driving quality outcomes, enhancing buildability and fostering innovation. As Regional Design Director you will work collaboratively with customers and industry specialists to ensure that the design for each project develops in accordance with the brief with a firm focus on added value, compliance, commercial viability, and best practice.

As our Regional Design Director, you will:

Lead a team of circa 15 direct reports from Trainee to Senior Design Manager.
Review the appropriateness of the Consultant Design Teams for each project in conjunction with the Commercial/ Regional Director.
Ensure the Contractors Proposals on each project are complete, unambiguous, have been reviewed by the bid team, and have been updated to include all post tender negotiations.
For each project, ensure all designer agreements, scope of works and design management plans are issued, agreed and fully understood by all parties, as well as ensuring a realistic design programme and information required schedule is produced and agreed by all parties to satisfy design, procurement and construction requirements.
Liaise with the Construction Director and visit the site teams on a regular basis to ensure all parties are fulfilling their obligations and review the design programme and processes to ensure satisfactory performance of the project and site team with respect to design.
Research future developments in government policy and impacts for the industry, main contractor compliance with these, wider global trends and innovations, and fully brief the business, advising on strategies, changes to implement, company policy, training, etc
Contribute to position the business as an industry leader in environmental and sustainable policy and practices, diversity and inclusion, training and development, etc.

About the Company/Client/Project:

This role is with the busy regional office of a large main contracting group, based in Berkshire with an annual turnover of £150M+ and covering the Thames Valley, M4 and M3 corridors, South Coast regions.

Scope of work is diverse covering schools and colleges, university faculty buildings, commercial offices, leisure centres, prisons, high end retirement living, date centres and life sciences building, typically ranging in value from £30m to £80m.

Requirements including certificates and qualifications:

You will ideally come from a career in Design Management working with a Tier 1 main contracting organisation, 15 plus years as Design Manager and a proven period as Head of Design or Regional Design Manager leading the function and team for a business unit.

You will possess excellent technical knowledge, leadership and communication skills, broad construction industry experience and demonstrate a 'continuous improvement and innovation' approach and attitude.
