A great opportunity has arisen within Royal Mail Heathrow Worldwide Distribution Centre. We are looking to recruit a new Work Area Operations Manager – Customs Freight Import. (weekend). You will report directly to the Shift Manager.As the Work Area Operations Manager will be responsible for monitoring and collection of postal ‘freight’ consignments and its conversion from a commercial/freight to a postal consignment. The Work Area Operations Manager will be accountable for every item and it’s transfer to the postal processing operation for onward distribution in domestic network.The role is responsible for managing a team of operators, in a defined work area of the plant, and for leading the team in a way which motivates, creates high performance and commitment. You will be responsible for Health & Safety compliance within the work area and for creating a working environment where all employees take responsibility for safety and wellbeing in accordance with Continuous Improvement Activities.You’ll be responsible for first line HR processes e.g. Conduct and Attendance, Engagement, Performance etc., alongside measurement and display of key metrics for the work area, and the analysis and continuous improvement of them.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for the day to day management of frontline staff
  • Ensure that all team members are trained to operate new technology, support work area team members through mentoring and one-to-one coaching activity, carry out the delivery of weekly Work Time Learning sessions to own work area team in line with the work and actively engage with staff preparing and delivering Team Meetings to promote front line participation and involvement
  • Manage HR policies and procedures in respect of Front Line employees and ensure consistent application of business standards, i.e. individual performance, behaviour, uniforms etc. through direction and guidance of management team and individuals
  • Maintain consistent application of IR framework, policies & strategies through the involvement of union representatives & employees
  • Liaise with other Work Operations Managers to ensure smooth flows of work across the International Logistics Centre and our Heathrow Worldwide Distribution Centre
  • Responsible for maintenance and analysis of all Work Area control systems
  • Providing the link between air handlers and Royal Mail processing with full accounting of all consignments including declarations to HMRC
  • Responsible for the achievement of KPI – shareholders, customers, efficiency, quality, budget & employees – identify trends in performance and create and implement Improvement Action Plans
  • Ensure work area compliance to the health and safety policy (including risk assessment), addressing day-to-day issues, and liaison with union H&S representatives

Job Requirements:

  • Operational knowledge – operational knowledge of the Export and Import processing of the parcels and the overall pipeline
  • Awareness of Freight/Cargo air handlers working practices and air freight management
  • IT literacy to use internal systems e.g. PSP, TRMS and Microsoft office programmes
  • Automation knowledge – knowledge of automation, mech performance metrics and the role of engineering in effective automation performance (knowledge of automation will be in great advantage)
  • Understanding of Custom Freight Simplified Procedures and awareness of customs warehousing
  • People skills – good communication skills (verbal and written), able to engage and motivate team members to work to high standards
  • Data analysis and problem solving – ability to use data to identify trends in performance and then develop solutions/make improvements
  • Safety – PIC trained with knowledge of safe systems of work, safety tools and techniques and the accident investigation process
  • Strong drive, enthusiasm and resilience – constantly strives to improve performance, ability to motivate and influence colleagues in a positive manor
  • Able to work under pressure, to tight deadline, in a fast-paced working environment
  • Relationships – able to build effective working relationships with a range of stakeholders to achieve business benefit
  • Experience of team working to achieve results

Qualification & Experience:

  • Competent in utilising customs software systems and declarations to HMRC
  • Good understanding on vehicle loads/capacities planning
