JOB PURPOSE
- The role of the advanced practitioner is a multi-disciplinary inter-professional
role and whilst there may be some variations in responsibility and clinical roles
this job description outlines the key areas of responsibility for these post
holders whilst working within the Group.
- To provide highly specialised surgical assistance in all aspects of surgery to
Consultant Surgeons and junior medical staff in the operating theatres
To understand advanced surgical techniques and make professional and
clinical decision for which the surgical assistant is accountable.
- To have an advanced knowledge of anatomy and physiology
- To have an advanced knowledge of current elective and emergency surgical
techniques and equipment required to achieve the optimal outcomes in
surgery
- To understand the principles of surgical technique required for various
disease entitles requiring surgery
- Assist with the co-ordination and smooth running of the operating sessions by
liaising with theatre and other personnel as appropriate
- To assist in the training of theatre staff in all aspects of theatre practice
- To assist in the development of new equipment for surgery and the maintenance of such equipment in conjunction with theatre personnel
Requirements:
Qualifications:
- RGN/ AHP/ HCS/ ODP
- To have undertaken advanced scrub practitioner surgical skills course
- To have evidence of continuing professional development
Experience:
- Demonstrable post registration experience. Familiar with care of the critically ill/unstable patient.
- Experience of working effectively within a MDT setting. Flexible approach to work.
- To have experience as theatre nurse within surgical theatres.
- Experience of working in a theatre environment.
- A competent practitioner with evidence of gaining and practicing some or all of the clinical and operational skills obtained it the job description. Proven leadership and management skills.
