Job Description

Bridges & Structures Senior Engineer

Full Time 37 hours per week

Are you an experienced Engineer looking for the next step in your career? Or do you just want a new challenge?

If you’ve got experience in the design, assessment or delivery of Bridges and Structures projects, Devon County Council could be a great fit for you.

In our in-house consultancy we design and deliver engineering projects for our internal clients. We manage projects from their inception to delivery on site, which means you’ll get experience in design, project management, site supervision and commercial decision making. If any of those are new to you, we’ll make sure you get the support to play a full part in your projects.

What projects will I be working on? Our projects span a huge range from the inspection, maintaining and replacement of our current infrastructure assets through to new bridges and structures on cycle trails, recycling centres, urban link roads and flood risk projects. We also undertake much larger projects; the Marsh Barton Railway Station has just opened (£20m), the North Devon Link Road improvement project is currently on site (£46m) and the A382 MRN project in Newton Abbot (£44m) is starting site clearance.

We have recently been project managing the A379 Pedestrian Bridge in SW Exeter. We are also reviewing our future programme of bridge assessment work and are keen to grow our design/ assessment teams. This work will be supporting our Bridge Assest Manager and fulfilling the Intelligent Client role.

Who will I be working with? The Engineering Design Group is a department of over 100 people. We are Engineers and Technicians who are passionate about delivering high quality infrastructure projects in our community.

You will be working in a team of approximately 8 people supported by a Principal Engineer. You will also be given the opportunity to support junior members of the team. We are supported by our colleagues across the broader fields of Environment, Highway & Traffic Management and Planning to name a few.

A green future Devon County Council declared a climate emergency in 2019. Since then decarbonisation has been high on the agenda when considering what we build and how we maintain it. In 2022 we were successful in bidding for £3.7m Live Labs funding to trial innovations aimed at decarbonising highway infrastructure. We intend that this project will change the way in which we think about the design and delivery of highway projects and we’re enthusiastic about meeting the challenge.

What benefits will I get? You’ll get a competitive salary, plus a range of benefits that include:

  • Career progression up to a salary of £46,464 following an established route of necessary qualifications and experience;
  • Experience and opportunity also given for career progression to Senior Management roles;
  • 26 days annual leave increasing to 31 after 5 years’ service;
  • Additional leave increase after 5 years (and up to 20yrs);
  • Training to support your career goals;
  • Mentor support to gain professional qualifications;
  • Flexible hours with the ability to accrue up to an additional 24 flex leave days per year;
  • Time off for bank holidays – typically 8 per year;
  • Other benefits include Devon Discounts, Stagecoach SW discounts and cycle to work scheme;
  • A generous pension scheme.

Where will I be based? Hybrid working is available to all. Our main office is in Great Moor House, Exeter, where we spend at least two days a week. Our engineering projects can be based across Devon.
