Job Description

We are continuing to expand with excellent opportunities to join our Highways team in Mold and Manchester.


Main Purpose of the Job

You will work in our Mold, Flintshire or Manchester City Centre Office providing project leadership on a range of schemes at various project stages for both public and private sector clients. A key focus will be providing technical expertise and leadership of highway design from feasibility and inception through to detailed design, specification/contract preparation and construction input.

As part of your role, you will assume responsibility of lead consultant for your discipline contributing to multidisciplinary projects, including liaison with client and establishing/agreeing the brief, delivering the specified work, undertaking contract administration, final account assessment and post contract completion assessment/as-built analysis if required. You will perform complex technical or professional work activities and assure delivery to meet client requirements.

The ability to produce preliminary and detailed design packages and monitor work to meet deadlines and other requirements is also an essential part of the role.

Additionally, you will be expected to provide direction to junior members of the team to support their development and achieve competent delivery. Carry out work within own discipline area collaborating with others as required for assigned projects as delegated by the Project Manager.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

  • Development, leadership and delivery of local highway designs within North West and North Wales regions
  • Implement project requirements to fully meet the client specification in accordance with relevant standards and to meet budget, time and quality objectives.
  • Collate project information, liaise and engage in clients and third parties as required.
  • Supervise site based projects as required and in accordance with the relevant construction contract eg NEC/JCT.
  • Supervise and delegate technical work to more junior members of staff and others as required.
  • Execute site-based or head office functions, liaising with the clients and other contractor staff to collect project specific information as required by the Project Manager
  • Check / approve own and other staff work, including third party design proposals, as identified in the Project Management Plan on assigned projects.
  • Carry out other duties identified in the Project Management Plan or as required by the Project Manager on assigned projects.
  • Monitor and report on the financial management of schemes from inception to completion.
  • Engage with other technical and professional colleagues and technical leads in order that cross disciplinary work is prepared to meet timescales.
  • Work with the Bid team to support the successful delivery of robust proposals, following company-wide processes.
  • Review and manage workloads, liaise with line manager in order to meet scheme timescales and avoid peaks and troughs in work.
  • Identify potential clients and liaise with the Regional Director to define market and client development strategies.

What Qualifications, Experience & Skills are required?

Qualification

  • Degree qualified in Civil Engineering
  • Ideally MEng or MSc
  • Professional Qualification (IEng/CEng MICE or MCIHT) or evidence of working towards.

Experience

  • 5-8 Years Highway design experience
  • Experience of working independently with relevant specialised systems, equipment and technical software to design and deliver highway engineering schemes.
  • Active travel design experience
  • Knowledge and experience of administering NEC contracts, preparing BoQ’s, works information and supervising works on site.
  • Experience of Mentoring/Training Staff
  • Previous local authority experience
  • Experience of providing services under framework conditions.
  • Experience of supporting bids
  • Experience of managing staff

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Up to date and thorough knowledge and understanding of the work practices, systems, processes and procedures relevant to the discipline.
  • Detailed knowledge and understanding of industry standard computer aided tools ie AutoCAD, Civils 3D, Microdrainage.
  • Understanding of Health & Safety issues in relation to the design and construction of civil engineering works
  • Strong Communication skills; verbal and written.
  • Strong report writing abilities.
  • Ability to formally train and mentor/manage other professional staff
  • Ability to communicate in Welsh
  • Project Management experience inc. financial monitoring of projects
