However,I was ableto demonstrate a keen interestand enthusiasmin wanting to work in this areain myinterviewandIhaven’t looked back since.I did go touniversityandIhave an LLB and LLM inInternational CommercialLaw,which has beengreatin helping me interpret and applydataprotectionand privacylaws and guidance. However, our team is made up of hugely talented people froma variety of backgroundsand experiencesand there isdefinitelynoone setroute into this role! What do you enjoy most about your work? There is so much I love about my work. I’m part of an ever-expanding Data Protection and Privacy team, surrounded by talented individuals, who I get to learn from every day. Our team operates as a Group function, which means we have visibility of exciting new projects and initiatives across all our entities and get to see things right from the start and as they develop. I feel very lucky that I was exposed to high-profile work very early on in my career. Standout moments include helping set up the governance framework of our GDPR Programme and working on several key workstreams to aid its delivery. I’ve also travelled to our European offices to support our international colleagues and coordinated our annual Data Protection Symposiums, to share learnings across our UK, European and US entities. What's the most exciting change or project happening within your area? There isactually alot of exciting things happening across our teamat the moment, but for me, I’m excited to dive into my new role and start shaping how we carry out communications, training and development across the business. Right now, I’m exploring communication channels to send mass and segmented communications to our employees and deciding on our longer-term communication schedules and content. We have an ambitious plan to work on over the next 12 months and I’m looking forward to seeing what we achieve. Are there opportunities to grow and develop here?Yes, so many opportunities! How has this adapted with remote working? One of Admiral’s core values is centred around fun and that is certainly something we try to embrace on our team. In recent times, we’ve had to adapt but you’ll still find us taking part in ‘Friday Fun’ activities – whether that is a quiz, gameshow or scavenger hunt organised over MS Teams. We’ve kept up with our team building activities as well, including virtual cocktail making, craft classes and the occasional fancy-dress day thrown in too.Do you have any advice for someone looking to join your area?If you’re new to the world of Data Protection and Privacy, I’d start by reading technology news to get a feel for the types of challenges we face and advise on day to day – emerging technology, smart devices, big data and cyber, to name a few. If that piques your interest, I’d also have a read of regulatory guidance across the UK and Europe to understand the types of considerations we advise on as part of our roles. In terms of skills, you’d suit a career with us if you’re inquisitive, a good communicator, like to get into the detail of how things work and don’t mind working in ‘grey’ areas, as rarely anything we advise on is black or white!View our current vacancies in Corporate Governancehere.

Summary

We spoke with Shannon Smith, Senior Data Protection Executive, about her career so far in Corporate Governance. What do you do in Admiral and how long have you been working here?I have been with Admiral for just over two and half years. I joined at Executive level and was promoted to Senior Executive on my second-year anniversary. As a Senior Executive, I get to coach and mentor newer team members and design and deliver internal training. I also take the lead in privacy-impact assessments and generally act as a role model to the team in terms of best practice when conducting work. I also act as a representative for the team, attending forums on data protection issues, supporting the business on technical knowledge, and dealing with senior stakeholders. With a background in Information Technology, I’ve quickly found myself supporting areas such as Data and Analytics (DnA), the Cloud Programme, and Telematics. I’ve had the opportunity to support our Pricing department, the Pricing Working Group and Veygo and now my focus is supporting Admiral Group’s new dynamic venture, Admiral Pioneer. My involvement with these areas has led to exciting opportunities such as working with the Alan Turing Institute on a collaboration, attending external meetings with senior players in the Telematics market, and attending the Data Science Academy at Cardiff University. I’ve also had the opportunity to travel to Admiral’s Rome office, Conte, as part of our annual Data Protection Symposium, where I presented to our Data Protection colleagues across the Group. How did you get into your role? What is your background?I graduated with a degree in IT in July 2018. My degree’s focus was around developing the skills you need to understand an organisation's information and technical needs, web development, computer programming, GIS, technical and end-user support, application development, databases, and modelling. Whilst the technical aspect of this was fantastic, I always found myself enjoying the governance modules a lot more and found a particular interest in data protection. After graduating, I applied for this position at Executive level using the Admiral Jobs website and was successful in my application. What do you enjoy most about your work?I really enjoy being able to continually learn about things that I am passionate about, such as technology, and particularly being female, learning about technology whilst in a governance type role is so rewarding. During my degree, I became a Science Technology Maths and Engineering (STEM) ambassador to help encourage young females to take up tech-based roles; I found that most of the misconception about STEM roles is that they are too technical, and I think my role here at Admiral is a perfect example as to why it’s not. What keeps me motivated are the opportunities I find myself landing and the experience I gain from these. I constantly question whether I am good enough, which is why I absolutely love my team and management and the trust they have for me. What can you tell us about the most exciting change or project happening within your area? There are lots of exciting changes happening in the Data Protection department; plenty of recruitment and the creation of different roles which is great to expand the team, meet new people, allow more focus on individual roles and a better opportunity to progress the teams’ individual careers as there is more space to grow. In addition, I am particularly excited to directly support Admiral Pioneer and Veygo, as I can work with lots of new people and help bring the new and upcoming ventures to delivery. Do you think there are lots of opportunities to grow and develop here?Yes, regardless of what stage you are at in your career, if you show that you are interested and are hardworking, you will be trusted to do things that you don’t even feel you should be doing, and this naturally leads to more and more opportunities. There are several qualifications available to our team; a year and a half into my role, I was given to the opportunity to sit CIPP/E – Certification IAAM Exam, which I successfully passed. There is also always opportunity to be rewarded, for example, in my first year, I was nominated and chosen for an Admiral Group Star Lunch award, hosted by senior management. I was also chosen to attend the European Data Protection Summit & Dinner held in London which gave me the opportunity to network with many data protection privacy and security professionals, most notably Max Schrems, who is well known for privacy activism, at such an early stage of my career. What’s the culture like in your area? How has this adapted with remote working?Second to none. Everyone is extremely friendly, easy to get along with and always eager to help one another. As mentioned previously, each one of us is tasked with learning something new each day but we share this with one another to expand our knowledge of the business, as we recognise that collectively we can do things better. Remote working has of course been a challenge, but this has been managed by various formats of catch ups, weekly meetings, quizzes, and face to face sessions when safe to do so. Do you have any advice for someone looking to join your area?My main piece of advice would be that Admiral’s Data Protection department differs massively to that of other companies. We are particularly large in size and support everything within the business from your general Car Insurance product to machine learning models. Therefore, regardless of your background, a willingness to learn is key. Other important skills and characteristics I’d say is to have adaptability, be ready to speak up, have an analytical mindset but also have the ability to see the bigger picture. Summary

Introducing the next blog in our I Belong series where we give you a peek into what working at Admiral is like, meeting our fascinating and inspiring colleagues from around the Group and giving insight into our friendly, diverse and inclusive workplace culture.Meet Leanne...I've worked in Admiral for 22 years, mostly in the Learning and Development team. I didn’t go to university, as I didn’t feel that was the right path for me at the time and instead opted to kick-start my career with Admiral.I joined as a Customer Services Representative and after a year, I saw an interesting internal opportunity. I applied and got the role of Trainer within the Learning and Development team.My learning really started here. I’ve had the opportunity to work and study towards certificates and qualifications such as CIPD, Trainer and Quality Assessor (TAQA), Institute of Leadership and Management (ILM) and Coaching and Meditation facilitation. All these opportunities to study and develop myself wouldn’t have come about if it wasn’t for Admiral believing in me and helping me on my desired development path to becoming a Trainer. I feel very grateful for the opportunities I’ve had here, such as working in two of our overseas offices and the opportunities I continue to have. Why did you choose Admiral as an employer?I wanted to work for a recognised company and be part of the Admiral team. I’d heard great things about Admiral at the time, and sure enough, it’s all been true! Why do you enjoy working at Admiral and what has kept you here?I enjoy working at Admiral because everyone is accepted and heard – everyone can contribute to the bigger picture. My managers have all been available for me, no matter how big or small my query, which I think it pretty unique. We recognise working together is the key to our success, while always striving to be better. Again, I’ve loved the amount of self-development opportunities available and the amount of investment the company puts into its people. Beyond the internal paths to different roles and areas within Admiral, the buy-a-book scheme is a fantastic way to develop! There’s an abundance of opportunity here, I’ve never really felt the need to look outside for opportunities. Everyone can have a great career here, one which will develop your skills and challenge you on a daily basis. How has Admiral supported you?Admiral has supported me in many ways; I’ve always felt well supported in my learning and development journey, but also through my lifestyle circumstances over the years. When I had children, Admiral supported me in the hours I could work, always being very flexible, accommodating and understanding, which was fantastic. What’s your favourite thing about working at Admiral? The culture is amazing, and I just love the determination to do the right thing for colleagues and customers. I feel proud to work at Admiral, especially when it comes to its commitment to ensure a safe environment is created for its people, where everyone feels included, respected and listened to – that’s so important to me. I also really appreciate how mental wellbeing is well supported here. As Admiral colleagues, we have access to great internal support, both via people and policies which is very important.

Summary

Gary Miles is our Process Governance Officer in Operational Change. Read on to learn about his career journey so far. What do you do in Admiraland how long have you been working here?I am a Process Governance Officer (PGO) and I work in a new part of the business called Operational Change. My role mainly involves working with colleagues to ensure that good visibility and communication is being seen in process changes we are implementing within the business. It’s an exciting time for Admiral generallyas there is a lot of change and innovation being implemented across the board andin order forthat to be successful, it’s important that everyone is informed and engaged. This engagement process takes up a large part of this position. In addition to this, I also am Project Lead for three business projects. The project side of things is slightly different to my PGO work in that Iam able toget more involved in resolving problems and being creative in those solutions, rather than focusing on the implementation and outcome of solutions already determined. How did you get into your role? What is your background? My background is insurance based and I have been in the industry for 35 years, working at Admiral for just over 26 of those. I started on a Youth Training Scheme programme, working for a Lloyds Insurance syndicate based in Kent. After moving to South Wales, I joined an Insurance Broker network before coming to Admiral as a Customer Service Agent. I then worked my way through to Team Manager after a couple of years. After spending some time in that position, I joined the Underwriting team and progressed through to anOperationsManager role which I undertook fora number ofyears. Then, about five years ago, I spent some time in Internal Audit and Compliance, applying what I had learned through my time in Admiral to assist those departments and help the business through some difficult processes. It was through that work that I was offered the chance to re-join the Operational side of the business and provide support to the department and colleagues which make up our customer facing teams. That work brought me into the role that I’m currently in.Are there any new developments you are currently looking forward to in your area? It’sreally hardto pick out what the most exciting change is currently, butas a whole Iwould say it’s how we’re integrating new technology into the business and using that to improve the product we offer our customers and the capabilities of our colleagues. There’s an awful lot going on and managing those components is tricky for all involved. The thing that makes it successful though is that the people I work with on a day-to-day basis are all very good at what they do, operate as a team and are committed to achieving our goals.Do you have a career-defining moment?I wouldn’t say one but there have been a couple. Initially, it would be joining Admiral in the first place, as without that, I think I probably would have drifted through a few organisations, maybe even relocated to a different part of the country entirely. The second would be joining the Underwriting department as that gave me the exposure to the business in a variety of ways and I learnt a lot in that period. Lastly, I would probably say moving back into the Operational side of the business has given me scope to use my experience to assist and impact on a larger scale, and that’s very satisfying. What do you thinkmakes Admiral a great place to work? How would you describe the culture here?I joined the business when it had only existed for just over 18 months, so I’ve seen it become the massive, diverse company it is today. The message from the top down has always been that our culture is an integral part of Admiral'ssuccess, andmaintaining this is a priority. That message is still loud and clear today, especially in a rapidly changing environment which is a challenge to every individual and business in the world. The people here care about the business and what they can do to make it better, and likewise, the business cares about the people and what it can do to make it better for them. That symbiotic relationship is the reason I believe why it’s a great place to work.Read more about our Admiral culturehere.
