Job Description

Senior/ Principal ETCS Engineer, Rail Specialist Services, London

About the Role:

At WSP, you’ll find yourself challenged in more fascinating and far-reaching ways than ever before. You’ll explore new and inspiring opportunities to make the most of your expertise, broaden your professional horizons and create exciting new possibilities for people, organisations and society.

The Digital Railway Services team is a globally networked group of engineers with an international footprint specialising in developing and implementing digital systems within the Rail sector. We specialise in the technologies of ETCS, Traffic Management, Connected Driver Advisory Systems and Stock & Crew Systems, and the fields of technical strategy, system integration and delivery assurance.

The team has on-going projects in the UK, Europe, Middle East and Australasia and is looking to both expand globally, and add depth to our offering as we move from acting primarily as a client advisor to include technical leadership of projects to our repertoire.

We are looking for an experienced to join our existing team in the UK in our offices in London, Birmingham, Manchester or Derby. We are not just a delivery team – we are advisors to some of the biggest projects in Europe and we provide insights and technical support across the lifecycle. On some projects you will be in the detail resolving issues, on others you will be providing strategic advice for procurement or business cases.

Whilst we do not expect every engineer to be a system engineer, we do expect you to be familiar with the practice. We can be tasked with assignments at any stage in the lifecycle so it is imperative that we integrate seamlessly with our client and provide a natural hub for systems integration.

As a consulting engineer, what we do goes beyond technical. We are here to promote the technology and to explore what is possible. Our clients come to us not just because we are experts but because we consider each problem and shape the solution on their behalf.

We are a client facing team, so you need to be comfortable working with clients, both individually and as part of a WSP team; and we get involved in everything from detailed technical system specification and architectural design, franchise advisory and business differentiation through to commission and bringing into use new technological solutions. Our approach is to provide robust and holistic solutions that future proofs the client and acts as the strategic enabler they require. Because of our strong blend of technical insight and problem-solving ability we often get called in to act as trouble-shooters on difficult or complex projects – and whilst we prefer to work strategically, we have no problem getting hands-on where the role requires it. We seek to be entrepreneurial welcome ideas, market insight and flair for spotting an opportunity.

A typical week would include:

  • Developing and publishing of ETCS Designs to deliver the Client’s objectives
  • Preparing conceptual reports, ETCS scheme designs, project documentation, specifications, contract schedules, implementation/construction plans and costings to client requirements.
  • Developing future ETCS concepts and white papers
  • Engaging clients directly to draw out their concerns and secure WSP work
  • Mentoring junior and graduate engineers and work within a Multi-discipline design team.

We'd love to hear from you if you have:

  • Are a qualified engineer either with a degree or vocationally trained
  • Are working towards or have achieved Chartered status
  • Have good experience of ETCS technology, its operation and specification or a CBTC equivalent
  • Have knowledge of conventional signalling, GSM-R, TMS, C-DAS or LRT systems – experience of more than one of these is a bonus
  • Understand system engineering and have knowledge of systems integration
  • Are comfortable writing papers and giving presentations, acting as the companies voice in industry.
