About the role:

  • To lead the software engineering team at MaPS, comprising front end, back end and full stack developers and DevOps, of around 10 heads in total
  • To manage, motivate and develop the capabilities of the team in line with the needs of MaPS
  • To ensure the delivery of high-quality software using best practice methods, through clear leadership, guidance and standards setting
  • To work with the MaPS solutions architect to define and optimise the technical design of MaPS digital tools

Key accountabilities:

Team leadership:

  • Coaching and mentoring staff, fostering an atmosphere of constant personal development
  • Setting and monitoring objectives to guide, support and develop performance
  • Allocating team members to development squads appropriately to optimise both outputs and skills development
  • Coaching agile collaborative software development techniques to nurture developers who perform well in teams
  • Embedding and aligning to the Digital, Marketing and IT Directorate delivery model to ensure consistent and efficient delivery

Setting standards of work, such as:

  • Keeping track of, and where appropriate implementing, the latest industry trends and technologies
  • Mandating robust engineering practices including e.g. peer code review, pair programming, test driven development and continuous integration to create code that is robust and sustainable
  • Developing and maintaining coding standards to align the work of internal and external development teams

Leading the development aspects of our digital product development work, such as:

  • Writing efficient, reusable and well-documented code
  • Using the latest front and back end techniques to build cross-platform interfaces, working closely with designers, developers, and editors
  • Following a component-driven development practice, using a content management system, shared component libraries, and shared design principles, to work efficiently while providing a clear and consistent user experience
  • Engaging collaboratively with architecture and DevOps teams on solutions design and implementation to ensure robust and well supported development

Experience and Expertise :

  • Significant demonstrable experience leading a full stack web development team for major national level websites
  • Demonstrable strong coding and technical design skills, with the ability to inspire, coach and mentor technical staff, leading by example
  • Significant demonstrable experience of leading web development on a major component content management system such as AEM, Sitecore, Episerver etc
  • Significant demonstrable experience of managing and developing engineering teams, including recruitment, individual and team development, coaching and mentoring
  • Significant experience of leading highly collaborative engineering teams demonstrating high performance in Agile frameworks
  • Demonstrable commitment to high quality, robust engineering practices, particularly those associated with Agile frameworks
  • Solid understanding of architectural principles and experience of productive collaboration with architecture, operations and DevOps staff
