A Senior technical Systems Engineering role applying the principles of Systems Engineering across the entire engineering development lifecycle, from requirement definition to system integration and customer acceptance into system customer support and disposal.
Undertakes system design and design maintenance activities for the Simulation & Training delivery stream (Modelling and Simulation Portfolio), in respect of new products and/or technology insertion into legacy products, under guidance from the System Design Authority (SDA).
Provides information and design input to enable the System Design Authority to make/endorse system decisions with respect to all systems aspects of Training Systems equipment, network and software design (noting Training Systems are primarily software-intensive systems running on Commercial-Off-The-Shelf (COTS) equipment).
Applies Systems Engineering experience to undertake a System of Systems (SoS) approach to analysis, design, test and integration between a mixture of synthetic, COTS and Government Furnished Equipment (GFE).

Responsibilities

Undertake Training Systems equipment design, network design and software design (noting Training Systems are primarily software intensive systems targeted to integrated COTS platforms), to include overall performance prediction and design of installations, to meet customer requirements within the budget available
Apply a breadth of knowledge, skills and experience of Systems Engineering and company approaches, techniques and governance to design and develop solutions and resolve engineering issues and problems for Training Systems products
Apply the Systems Engineering principles of ISO 15288 to the design and build of systems through the entire engineering lifecycle
Discern and decompose stakeholder requirements to system and sub-system level and manage these in an approved toolset such as IBM DOORS Next
Undertake system design decomposition and architectural modelling to subsystem level, including associated external and internal interface definition, and manage architectural models in an approved toolset such as CATIA Magic (Cameo)
Produce & maintain system design documentation to reflect deployed Training Systems
Produce procurement specifications in liaison with Training Systems and sub-contractor stakeholders, and ensure compliance of associated delivered products & services
Define and undertake system integration, test planning and execution
Define acceptance strategies, in liaison with the System Design Authority, in order to verify requirement compliance at specific levels of system design, supporting production of customer acceptance evidence
Undertake technical reviews, verification and approval of engineering technical design, documentation and service delivery support practices, ensuring compliance with business, legislative and customer requirements
Support identification and recording of ITAR and EAR item status
Contribute to product safety activities and reviews
Undertake prototyping of proposed Training Systems product solutions
Support bid solution design and estimating, to ensure that bids capture all requirements, customer obligations and acceptance criteria, achievable solutions with acceptable levels of technical risk and conformance with Company and Product Policies and standards

Qualifications

Higher education (or equivalent experience) in a relevant Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) discipline
Achieved or working towards Chartered Engineer status and/or a relevant professional accreditation e.g. IET MIET CEng; INCOSE UK ASEP or CSEP certification

Essential skills

Understands engineering principles and approaches underpinning design and development activities and be capable of systems thinking, applying holistic approaches to complex problems
Demonstrates understanding, knowledge and experience of Systems Engineering including knowledge of appropriate Systems Engineering standards (e.g. ISO 15288)
Strong problem solving skills, both in terms of creative (product design and development) and analytical areas (e.g. performance assessment)

Desired skills

Appreciation of, or some experience in, software design and development
Knowledge of electrical regulations, fire detection/suppression systems and HVAC systems
Experience of using a high level design methodology (e.g. UAF, NAF, TOGAF, SysML, UML)
Experience of working with contemporary concepts and technologies e.g. MBE, MBSE, digital twins, autonomous systems, AR/VR, AI/ML, IoT, etc.
Knowledge of the defence industry, including geopolitical influences and current UK government strategy
Must be self-motivated and pro-active

Experience

Experience of system integration, test and acceptance
Experience of requirements management (e.g. IBM DOORS Next) and application of configuration management
Experience of working with large scale complex system designs
Experience of multiple phases of an engineering lifecycle and good knowledge of lifecycle models (e.g. Waterfall, Agile) and associated tools (e.g. JIRA)
Experience of presenting both technical and non-technical information in a formal setting
Good level of IT literacy
Requires concise, logical and accurate communication skills and diplomacy skills
Will operate effectively as a senior member of a technical team
Must understand technical instructions
Must be able to articulate technical information effectively, both orally and in writing, to others at various levels of seniority
