Job Description

Cranleigh STEM is working with a leader in the waste management sector, we are looking for a Senior Chemist to play a vital role in the day-to-day operations of the Technical Transfer Station, ensuring the efficient processing of waste consignments.

Responsibilities include receiving waste, documentation, completing waste transfer notes, identifying, and addressing non-conformances, inspecting and segregating waste deliveries, and contributing to the overall cleanliness and orderliness of the site. Additionally, operate waste processing equipment, and uphold high standards in work and health and safety.

Key Duties:

  • Review waste delivery documentation and validate consignment notes.
  • Inspect, classify, and segregate waste materials.
  • Safely operate forklift trucks.
  • Categorize and pack waste for collection by technical drivers at customer sites.
  • Drive company vans for the collection of small waste consignments.
  • Prepare loads for dispatch, including artic flatbed vehicles and vacuum tankers.
  • Ensure accurate labelling and listing of outgoing loads to third-party disposal sites.
  • Shunt vehicles within the yard for waste/container loading and unloading.
  • Contribute to yard cleanliness through sweeping and jet-washing.
  • Demonstrate a commitment to personal responsibility for health and safety, quality, and environmental standards.
  • Uphold and promote high safety standards.
  • Assist in managing contractors on-site.
  • Collaborate in planning daily tasks for site operators.
  • Maintain appropriate storage levels.
  • Ensure availability of necessary resources.
  • Adhere to all company policies, including health and safety and employment guidelines.
  • Undertake any additional duties or ad hoc projects requested by the Manager/Supervisor or Board of Directors within the job holder's skills and capabilities.

Qualifications:

  • Minimum HNC in Chemistry or a Chemistry/Environmental-related discipline; a degree in Chemistry (or Chemistry/Environmental-related discipline) preferred.
  • GCSE or equivalent in Mathematics and English Language.
  • Possession of a full UK driving license.

Skills and Experience:

  • Familiarity with the hazards associated with materials received at transfer stations.
  • Competent operation of machinery and plant equipment in a safe manner.
  • Ability to work outdoors and in challenging environments, including wearing protective suits and respirators.
  • Strong willingness to learn.
  • Capability to work independently and in busy environments.
  • Adherence to precise and stringent deadlines.
  • Understanding of Best Available Techniques (BAT) processes.
  • Flexibility in working hours to ensure smooth Transfer Station operations.
  • Capacity to contribute ideas and insights to promote the development of the Transfer Station and department.
