Within this role, you will be part of the North West & Central Region, working for the Central Route. The Central route covers a major part of the national rail network, with hundreds of thousands of passengers, and thousands of tonnes of freight carried within our route each week. Within our route is the Chiltern Main Line between London Marylebone and the West Midlands, the Snow Hill line from Stratford-upon-Avon to Worcester, the Cross City line in Birmingham, and lines to other cities including Wolverhampton, Coventry, Walsall, and Oxford.

We also have big plans under way in the Central route. The planned HS2 railway includes stops in Birmingham and Solihull, providing much-needed additional capacity on the rail network and faster journeys for passengers. East West Rail will also re-establish a rail link between Cambridge and Oxford and improve connectivity within the region.

Brief Description

An exciting Signal & Telecoms Maintenance Engineer opportunity has become available within the North West Route maintenance team based in Saltley (Duddeston, Birmingham). The Railway in this area serves its customers on a 24 hour basis, throughout the year, and you will be required to lead and direct the Maintenance delivery teams in the inspection and maintenance of safety critical signalling and Telecommunication assets to laid down technical and safety standards safely and within budgets. An element of on call is a requirement of this post to support teams.

About the role (External)

  1. Lead and direct the Railway Signalling and Telecommunications Maintenance teams to achieve business and functional objectives and meet key performance measures.
  2. Manage development of individuals and the motivation and engagement of the team.
  3. Manage the arrangements for staff safety and competence within the operational Railway environment.
  4. Identify and implement safety, asset performance, reliability, productivity and efficiency improvement initiatives.
  5. Manage the inspection and maintenance of Railway Signalling and Telecommunication assets to laid down safety and technical standards.
  6. Manage the prioritisation of safety critical work and delivery to plan.
  7. Check that safety, assurance, compliance to standards, performance and business processes are followed.
  8. Identify and submit non compliances to standards for approval and take appropriate mitigating actions where required.
  9. Manage the process to handover and accept back operational assets being renewed or modified by large and smaller project teams.
  10. Authorise the restoration to normal operation after completion of testing/investigation, assets that have failed, been subject to an allegation or been renewed as part of a maintenance delivered renewal programme.
  11. Develop and agree annual maintenance, inspection and testing programmes and resource levels.
  12. Develop and authorise quarterly work plans and resource levels.
  13. Identify and propose asset renewals.
  14. Review and approve method statements and/or plans for design and/or work activities as required.
  15. Undertake investigations and report on accidents/incidents.
  16. Undertake an agreed programme of safety tours, staff surveillance, work quality and asset condition checks.

In order to be successful in this role, we would like you to have/to be:

  • Relevant technical competence
  • Experience in maintenance management, processes and techniques
  • Knowledge of safety and compliance management processes
  • Detailed knowledge of relevant standards and procedures
  • Knowledge of operational railway environment
  • Knowledge of other functional disciplines
  • IRSE Licence holder (Signalling only)
  • Local Accident & Incident Investigation
  • Good interpersonal, influencing, communication and organisation skills

It's not mandatory to have the below, but it would be desirable to have:

  • Incorporated Engineer
  • Membership of professional body
