Job Description

Hyphen, an innovative journalism start-up focused on issues relevant to Muslim communities in the UK and Europe, is seeking a Social Media and Audience Development Manager .

This is both a strategic and hands-on role, with a primary focus on growing and better engaging with our audience across all channels.

The ideal candidate will have:

  • At least three years’ experience in social media marketing and/or SEO. A background in journalism is desirable
  • Developed and implemented social media and SEO strategies that have grown audiences and engagement for a media platform
  • A deep understanding of search protocols and dynamics, social media, internet culture and audience distribution strategies
  • Robust insight into the interests and aspirations of Muslim communities in the UK and Europe
  • A talent for writing and producing content for social media
  • Excellent communication skills, enthusiasm and a collaborative mindset
  • A nose for news and viral moments, and enjoy coming up with responses that fit with Hyphen’s purpose and audience.

Key responsibilities:

  • Develop and implement strategies that drive audience numbers and engagement across our various platforms.
  • Write, produce and manage all posts on social media, supported by the social media producer. This includes Facebook, TikTok, Instagram, Twitter, YouTube and other relevant platforms.
  • Represent Hyphen online, actively engaging with our community on all social channels, supported by the social media producer.
  • Optimise the stories produced by our journalists to grow and diversify our audience in the UK and abroad.
  • Present and contextualise data on reach and engagement for the newsroom and help journalists identify ways to use it.
  • Work with editors to develop plans for reader revenue and provide insights and ideas for new products, including podcasts and newsletters.
  • Stay at the forefront of trends in SEO, social media, newsletters, video and anywhere else we publish or share our work.
  • Help manage relationships with platform and third-party contacts, and share knowledge with the wider organisation.
