Job Description

Sitting within our commercial services group, our education & charities team has wide experience across the whole sector of charity law and the general law as it applies to charities and other not-for-profit organisations.

They provide a breadth of assistance on a range of matters, including forming and registering charitable companies, Charitable Incorporated Organisations (CIOs) and other not-for-profit entities; advising on charitable trading and the establishment of trading subsidiaries; preparation of governing documents, including Articles of Association, CIO Constitutions and Rules for Community Benefit Societies; and providing governance advice on the structure of charities, the appointment and removal of trustees, trustee duties and charity law compliance.

The team also provide cross-disciplinary support to the wider commercial services group, as well as other departments, including commercial property, corporate and private wealth & succession.

The role

Based in our Leeds and/or Bradford office, you will ideally be a solicitor with at least 2 years PQE, with proven experience in advising charities and a good understanding and knowledge of the different forms of charitable organisations. We will also consider less qualified solicitors, provided that they have relevant charity specific experience.

What we’re looking for

You must have experience of advising on or assisting with the formation and incorporation of charities and mergers/collaborations/joint ventures involving charities, and of advising boards of trustees on governance matters and regulatory aspects of charity practice.

Previous experience or a proven understanding of advising schools on education law matters such as safeguarding, special needs and admissions, including the academisation process, will be an advantage.

You will need to be an excellent communicator who is team-orientated, with an approachable, friendly and open style of working.

This role falls within our hybrid working arrangements, which incorporate elements of working from home combined with office-based working.
