Inmarsat’s Chief Technology Office (CTO) business unit sits at the core of our business and focuses on innovative technology development and engineering. The CTO maintains a centre of excellence for technology and broader infrastructure-related innovation, translating market needs into core expansion programmes to enable market development. We ensure that Inmarsat’s products and services are constantly pushing the boundaries of satellite communications. The CTO team is responsible for delivering Inmarsat development programmes, including satellites and launchers, ground infrastructure (ground stations, networks, user terminals and access technology), regulatory, market access and product and service development.

Job Description

This role is for a subject matter expert in air interface and system design within the Network Architecture team, which is part of the larger Systems Engineering group within CTO. The goal is to strengthen the team’s system architecture, design and engineering capability, and become a key player and contributor in designing Inmarsat’s future communications systems from concept to implementation.

This role has a strong focus on 3GPP-based system architecture and protocols, and the application of new and emerging principles, technologies, and standards such as 5G, Open RAN, digital baseband and cloud-native, software-defined, disaggregated system architectures.

 Key Responsibilities:

  • Taking an active role as a subject matter expert in the development and evolution of existing and future Inmarsat communications systems, with the goal of becoming a key point of contact across CTO
  • Using innovative thinking and novel technologies to research, develop and demonstrate new system concepts and architectures that could meaningfully improve existing and future Inmarsat systems
  • Working with our industry and manufacturing partners to develop and test PoC devices and ground network components to validate system designs
  • Liaising with the architecture, payload, RAN and terminal teams in CTO throughout system design and implementation
  • Becoming a subject matter expert on 3GPP and Open RAN principles, system architecture and protocols and their possible applications to Inmarsat’s systems
  • Strengthening Inmarsat’s presence within 3GPP and other technical standardization bodies, including active participation in 3GPP RAN, SA and CT TSGs as required, remotely or in-person, and coordinating with the rest of Inmarsat’s 3GPP and standards teams
  • Designing and co-maintaining novel link and system-level simulation tools. The models will cover the radio, link, and network layers and may require consideration of satellite dynamics and orbital mechanics. There will be a particular emphasis on resource utilisation and optimisation, as well as link and system performance in the presence of interference and other impairments
Qualifications

Essential Knowledge and Skills:

  • BSc/BEng (or higher degree) in a relevant technical degree (Satellite Communications, Telecommunications, Physics, Computer Science)
  • Experience in Satellite or Terrestrial Mobile Communication systems
  • Experience with 3GPP and 3GPP-based mobile communication systems and protocols, particularly 4G and 5G generations
  • Strong problem solving and analytical skills, with emphasis on attention to detail
  • Positive and energetic attitude
  • Self-motivated with the drive to work autonomously
  • Excellent spoken and written communication. Assertive and confident raising action points with senior staff
  • Demonstrate a recognition of knowledge gaps and a willingness to close these through online training (and in person as soon as possible)
  • Multi-cultural awareness; experience of working in, and with, a wide variety of cultures in a global environment

Desirable Knowledge and Skills:

  • Demonstrable knowledge of air interface protocol layers; physical layer and link budget analysis skills are important
  • Experience with 3GPP link-level and system-level simulation and/or coexistence analysis
  • Experience with the 3GPP working procedures and standardization process
  • Experience in software development and using modelling simulation tools, preferably Matlab, Python or NS-3. Some familiarity with STK would also be desirable
  • Experience in algorithmic design, testing, and optimisation
  • Experience with cloud-based data analysis and processing tools (e.g. AWS, GCP)
  • Collaborative coding (Git and GitHub) communicating in a pro-active manner about the various updates
  • Alternatively, software development skills in and agile software design methodologies
  • Experience with using Jira or other agile issue tracking systems
