Technical Director/ Director, Transport Planning, London

About the Role:

The role would be based in our growing Transport Planning team across the UK leading government and local authority activities, including Local Authority frameworks and contracts, with focus on London and the South East, including TfL, London Boroughs and the authorities surrounding London. There would be involvement in other wider UK clients including Sub-National Transport Bodies, National Government, eg DfT, Highways England and Network Rail, National frameworks, such as and city region major projects.

We lead Local Authority frameworks for transport strategy and policy and provide front end advice on project/scheme development through to successful business case, supporting major schemes. We also provide transport advice for national government bodies such as Highways England, Network Rail as well as sub-national transport bodies. The role would involve developing and leading opportunities with public sector key clients and leading local authority frameworks. This includes giving advice on the implications of future ready, decarbonising transport, active travel and wider sustainability issues. We provide transport planning solutions from initial concepts, through planning to full implementation. In doing so, we provide high level advice (including expert witness services) to public sector clients on transport related planning and feasibility issues.

A typical week would include:

  • Winning new contracts/frameworks, developing operation of contracts, client care and wider growth of workload across London and the South East;
  • National, regional and local lead on transport activities for a range of studies, strategies and projects;
  • Working as technical lead (working as part of a 500 strong Transport Discipline team across the UK). Responsible for leading early stages of multi-discipline infrastructure projects;
  • Work closely with the Transport Planning Service Line Director Adrian Hames and key Government leads, including Nasar Malik, Martyn Brooks and then colleagues in our Transport & Infrastructure Local Government Business; and
  • Responsible for growing workload and managing transport planning and early stages of infrastructure projects with existing and new clients.
  • Leading on strategic studies, working with local and national government bodies on strategies and delivery of programmes, projects, project management, concept studies, leading to planning applications. Typically this will involve a number of projects and clients at any given time.
  • Overall responsibility for ensuring your projects are technically correct, comply with contractual requirements, and are delivered to budget and programme.
  • Leading teams/ team of support staff, client liaison and business development. It represents an exceptional opportunity for the right candidate to work within this region and across the UK to support the growth of the WSP business.
  • Working very closely with our established teams, the successful candidate will report directly to a Director. Ability to work flexibly will be important to meet requirements.

We'd love to hear from you if you have:

  • Relevant education and professional qualifications
  • Extensive experience and track record in both Transport Planning, Infrastructure Projects and Government services/delivery, and will have a wide knowledge of the industry
  • Work-winning capability with a sustained and ability to provide success, measurable in terms of volume and profitability
  • Sustained success with the implementation of operational and technical action plans to improve delivery
  • Recognised technical, senior leadership capability with a successful record of delivery;
  • Role model in the leadership, management and delivery of excellent strategies and projects.
