Job Description

The Company

Gilead Sciences, Inc. is a research-based biopharmaceutical company that discovers, develops and commercialises innovative medicines in areas of unmet medical need. With each new discovery and investigational drug candidate, we seek to improve the care of patients living with life-threatening diseases around the world. Gilead’s therapeutic areas of focus worldwide include HIV/AIDS, liver diseases, COVID-19, oncology, cell therapy and inflammation, and serious respiratory and cardiovascular conditions.

The Position

Gilead Sciences’ UK & Ireland commercial affiliate is seeking a lawyer to join its Legal & Business Conduct team, based in central London.  The role reports to the Legal Senior Director (UK/I) and sits within a small, highly collaborative UK & Ireland Legal & Business Conduct team.  This team forms part of Gilead’s global legal function.

This is an exciting, dual legal and compliance role in a broad and evolving practice with responsibility for advising key therapeutic and functional areas across the business and being involved in business decisions and commercial strategy from inception to implementation. The successful candidate will have a proactive, hands-on mentality and be focused on finding pragmatic solutions.

This role offers great opportunities to learn and develop in an innovative and supportive business environment. It would suit both lawyers with in-house experience and lawyers looking to make their first step out of private practice.

Diversity and Inclusion

We are looking for lawyers who bring diversity of thought and experience to Gilead. Building an inclusive and diverse legal team is critical to us: we are committed to creating an inclusive culture that reflects the diversity of our patients. In this culture we believe all people will do their best work.

Responsibilities

  • Working with the other members of the Legal & Business Conduct team to ensure comprehensive support and advice on legal and business conduct issues across all business units and functions in the UK & Ireland affiliate.

These include:

  • Pricing and reimbursement processes in the UK and Ireland

  • Supply, distribution and tenders

  • Promotion and marketing activities, including in-person interactions and digital communications

  • Collaborative working with healthcare organisations

  • Market research and business analytics

  • Medical Affairs activities, including medical education

  • Interactions with patient organisations and community groups

  • Policy and government affairs initiatives.

  • Advising on and negotiating commercial contracts, including:

  • Implementing and embedding the automated contract generation system within the affiliate, identifying improvements to make use of the system more efficient.

  • Maintaining contract templates, adapting Gilead global templates for the UK and Ireland

  • With the other members of the Legal & Business Conduct team, embedding and developing the affiliate’s compliance framework. In partnership with business colleagues, this will include:

  • Identifying areas of potential risk on an on-going basis, and contribute to the formal annual risk assessment

  • Developing documented policies and processes

  • Designing and delivering effective in-house training

  • Resolving issues and share lessons learnt

  • Helping to embed a strong compliance culture

Knowledge and experience

The successful candidate will have knowledge and experience in commercial contracting and in advising on laws and regulations relevant to Gilead’s business in the UK and Ireland, for example anti-bribery, data privacy, competition law or public procurement.

Experience advising the pharmaceutical or biotechnology industry (in-house or in private practice) and/or advising on medicines regulations, the ABPI Code and/or IPHA Code will be an advantage but is not a pre-requisite.

Candidates must be qualified to practice as a lawyer in the UK.

Skills

The successful candidate will have the following skills:

  • Strong analytical approach and attention to detail.

  • Clear and efficient drafting and negotiation

  • Strong communication – both written and verbal

  • Good judgment and common sense in finding practical solutions

  • Strong time management and organisation, able to meet deadlines across multiple tasks with shifting priorities in a fast-moving environment.

  • Ease of collaboration both within the immediate team and with colleagues across different functions

Behaviours

The successful candidate will also demonstrate the following behaviours:

  • Self-motivated and proactive

  • Curious with a desire to learn

  • Strong client service orientation.

The successful candidate will also reflect the Gilead core values of:

  • Integrity (doing what’s right),

  • Teamwork (working together),

  • Excellence (being your best)

  • Inclusion (encouraging diversity)

  • Accountability (taking personal responsibility)
