Job Description

Here at York Vets for Pets we are really proud of the supportive and friendly culture we have cultivated within our team. We place real focus on the well-being of everyone who works for us as well as the fantastic service we provide to our clients and their pets. We currently have a rare opportunity for a Veterinary Surgeon to join us.

About us:

We are an experienced 5 vet team, led by practice owner and Vet Helen. With vets from 5 years to 20 years graduated we enjoy a lot of case discussion and support is never far away. Our vets work alongside a fantastic nursing team consisting of 6 RVNs and an SVN, who are encouraged to utilise their skills as much as possible which means our days run as smoothly as possible.

One area we place particular emphasis on is team well-being. This is demonstrated in the way our diary is arranged allowing you the time to think about and thoroughly work-up cases as well as taking the ‘down-time’ you need in the day. We have a beautiful garden area for the team to enjoy and an indoor colleague area for the colder days. We have a well-being board for the whole team for recognition and to organise social events and have two mental health first-aiders in the team. We hold regular practice and vet meetings to allow everyone chance to input into our ways of working and have our own WhatsApp chat groups allowing for extra case discussion and an additional channel of support.

We are an RCVS accredited practice and have achieved ‘Outstanding’ status for ‘client service’ and for ‘team and professional responsibility’ from the RCVS in addition to our bronze ISFM accreditation. Our commitment to client care means we have a loyal and friendly client base with a good percentage of insured pets so get to keep cases in house where appropriate. We also welcome a peripatetic orthopaedic surgeon, ultra-sonographers and cardiologists giving us continuity in practice too.

We also support lots of local community events including school visits, brownies and cubs helping to cement our local reputation.

What our team say the best thing about working for us is:

...the fact that we have such a considerate, caring, and fair management ethos captained by Helen.
...Each individuals strengths, talent, and personality contribute to what makes this team a ‘family’.
...the team, job satisfaction, supportive management team.
...supportive team, fast-paced, and enjoyable.
...caring for patients and clients, support from the team, enjoyability of the work.
...the team, supportive boss, nice facilities.
...family, friends, and job satisfaction.
...people, relaxed atmosphere, feel like input matters.
...friendly, job satisfaction, and family- team.

The Role:

This is a part time role with our new team member ideally covering 2-3 full days but we are happy to discuss different working rota’s as understand that everyone has different hobbies and commitments. We do ask that you join our 1 in 4 Saturday rota for which our opening hours are 9am - 5pm. There are no OOHs, Sundays or bank holidays with this role.

To be successful in this role you will ideally already have some experience in practice and feel confident with basic consults and surgeries. For more experienced vets we have the caseload to keep you entertained and CPD is very much supported and funded including if you are interested in doing a certificate. This would add to the current imaging and dermatology certificates our team are completing. All our current vets get one set surgery day a week however if your interest lies in medicine, we can offer a consult only role.

All sick pet consults are 30 minutes and your day will include allocated admin time giving the opportunity to focus on and work-up cases as well as meaning we can provide the excellent service to our clients that we have become known for. The only sole charge in this role would be on weekends where there would be remote ‘back-up’ should you feel you wanted it.

In addition to a salary starting from £40K we offer a very competitive package including but not limited to:
  • 5.6 weeks holiday (increasing to 6.6 weeks after 2 years service)
  • Birthday off
  • Access to AXA healthcare Cycle to work
  • Relocation package (where applicable)
  • Visa sponsorship
  • Paid memberships (BVA, RCVS and VDS)
  • Generous CPD allowance
  • Exclusive discounts across the ‘Pets’ group and a wide selection of high street retailers via Our reward Hub

Our location:

Our practice is based in the City of York, a city with so much to offer. Whether you’re interested in history, want to spend as much time as possible in the great outdoors or are a lover of city life this area has something for everyone and is also just a short drive from stunning North Yorkshire coastline. York is well serviced by transport links whether travelling by train or car and easily reached from 4 international airports.

If this sounds like the opportunity for you, please contact our practice owner and Vet Helen: helen.trory@vets4pets.com We would love you to come in, meet the team and experience our friendly, supportive culture first-hand. Our team would also be happy to have an informal chat with anyone considering this role. If you’re based further afield, we would be happy to arrange a phone or video call to begin with.

Pets just see people. They aren’t biased and they don’t discriminate. We take our inspiration from pets, and we value and respect difference in all its forms. Our aim is to reflect the diversity of the communities we operate in, and every colleague can help us achieve this. We encourage our people to be themselves so even if your skills and experience don’t perfectly align, if you think you can make a unique contribution through your values and behaviours, we want to hear from you!
