Fosse Way Farm Vets is an IVC farm-only practice that opened in November 2022. We formed as an established group of colleagues who have worked together for many years, and since opening Fosse Way we have taken on new team members and rapidly become a highly reputable brand amongst the farming community. We are based in central Leicestershire and service dairy, beef and sheep farms throughout the county and surrounding areas.
Our current team consists of five vets, some of whom are part-time, with two more assisting out of hours. One of our Clinical Directors has a certificate (CertCHP) and the other has a PhD in dairy cattle lameness, and we are launching a veterinary consultancy branch within the business in June 2024. We have two ATTs/ Vet Techs, developing Vet Tech services and helping keep TB testing to a minimum for vets, and two in our office team.
The current position is to fill the vacancy of a vet who is relocating. At the same time, we are expanding rapidly, so require a farm vet to join our team and add to the service we are providing to farmers. We are a close-it bunch and some often go out for meals and theatre trips together, which is of course not obligatory!
The dairies we work with supply a range of retailers including Tesco and Long Clawson (makers of Stilton cheese). The beef farms include large suckler herds, calf rearers and beef finishing units. We deliberately do not provide veterinary work for species other than cattle and sheep, so we can provide the best possible commercial, farmer-centric, service.
A typical working day for you would involve routine fertility visits for dairies, health planning and reactive work too, whether for sick animals, disease outbreaks or obstetrics. Seasonal elements include PD and blood sampling with our suckler herds, and you will have the freedom and support to lead the farms and advance any area of farm veterinary medicine that is required.
We have TotalVet, Interherd+ and VetImpress, and encourage their use for regular reporting of data to our farms to deliver value and maintain engagement. We run regular benchmarking meetings, whether for dairies on udder health, fertility and youngstock health, or for beef and sheep farms on fertility and disease KPIs, and consider these meetings a key part of our identity.
Being part of IVC we are well supported with CPD. IVC runs a “Farm Congress” twice per year, a two-day event to which all practice members may have time away to attend. It is excellent for networking and just having fun! There is no limit to the CPD you can do, provided it has the potential to add value to our offering as a practice.
You may have either a twin-cab pickup truck e.g. a Ford Ranger or Toyota Hilux, or a van, as per your preference, which will be available for personal use if you wish.
The out of hours rota is 1:4. Our out of hours is exceptionally quiet because we work predominantly with large farms who employ well-educated staff. This is deliberate, to reduce workload for vets out of hours and we will keep it this way.
Minimal TB testing as we have two ATTs. We are also running and expanding our Vet Tech services, which are centred around mobility and calf health.
